Beginning in the late 1980s
GUITAR WORLD Magazine initiated the
Guitar Buyer’s Guide
project that ran at least into the early 2000s
, by which time
the Internet had
pretty much
begun to kill
magazines
.
These basically surveyed all guitar, bass, amp, and effects companies selling products in the U.S. and published
lists of
(a)
the model, (b) the list price, and (c) a brief description.
Some
instruments were given illustrations, but this
should
n
ot
be considered
an
“
illustrated guide.
”
Please s
ee the pictures to understand the format
, but
basically there’s a detailed description, a picture perhaps, and the suggested retail list price.
In addition—and perhaps most importantly—by 1999 the editors had discovered that cheesecake sold, and they adde
d Disco Queens in scanty costumes holding sexy guitars.
These models were featured on the cover, table of contents, and in a pull-out poster.
The poster
here
is
all intact.
Please see the pictures.
These Guides are also, by the way, chock
-
a
-
block ful
l of interesting advertising from the times, which in
themselves
provide
much
useful information.
I used these back in the day when I was assembling brand model lists for various columns I was writing for
Vintage Guitar Magazine
.
By the time I got these I’d stopped writing those kinds of columns, so these have never been used.
The first time I saw the posters was when I took these pictures.
Getting these was
pro forma
.
I may have 2001 and 2003 somewhere, but I also lost my job a
nd started a company in that timeframe, so who knows?
These Guides are not Gospel.
You don’t know if a guitar listed here was discontinued in June…unless it appears in the next year’s Guide.
There may b
e limited editions that miss the Guide
list
s entirely.
Maybe an intern filled out the questionnaire and wasn’t thorough.
Anyhow I would triangulate between these and other sources at my disposal and could at least have a ballpark understanding
of when va
rious models appeared and disappeared
.
Working with all paper sources, including catalogs, only provides so much information
and there’s always room for outliers
.
I have almost all of these Guides, including
a few
later ones produced by
Guitar Player
, up until 2004
.
I have decided to group these in LOTS of 2 or 3 based on relative dates.
A search of Sold items
on eBay
finds VERY FEW of these and they’re trading in the
each
range.
I’m
listing
these considerabl
y lower.
Condition
By the time I got these I was no longer doing instrument surveys.
These were never opened except for taking these pic
tures
.
Pictures are of actual item you will receive.
I’ve been conservative and accurate in my detailed descriptions of the item’s exact condition, including pictures, so you should know what you’re getting.
If you find that I’ve missed something, please contact me.
EBay has numerous tools for working out
a solution.
Feel free to ask questions in advance.
These periodicals are
from my private collection.
I am not an antiques, musical instrument, or commercial book dealer who has
picked
items for resale.
Everything I’m selling was originally purchased for
my own use—to play, read, or support my research for writing my books and guitar history columns in
Vintage Guitar Magazine
.
It’s just time to start letting go…and make my wife happy.
Consider this my contribution to “recycling.”
Please see my other au
ction items.
Thank you and happy bidding!
