Antique Tibetan Buddhist Rotating Prayer Wheel with Turquoise & Red Coral Stones, & Carved Handle.
This lovely prayer wheel is 11" long and was made in the early 1900s of stamped nickel silver and copper.
The wheel is decorated with red coral and turquoise stones. The handle is carved with images of Buddha, with a metal spindle and a oxen bone insert. It is in excellent condition with some small chips on the handle is worn from use. Inside the rotating wheel are thousands of prayers on a long, rolled up scroll of paper.
Tibetan Buddhists believe rotating the prayer wheel while reciting a positive sentiment or wish known as mantra releases the prayers and combats negativity. Buddhism is a religion originating from India, which promotes ethical and unselfish behavior. Prayer wheels such as this are still used and are an important part of the Buddhist faith.
