Simply Accounting 2003 PRO has been tweaked significantly compared with earlier versions, both internally (with several new day-to-day accounting features, particularly in reports) and externally (with a new integrated Web store). Though not quite as all-encompassing as QuickBooks Premier 2003, Simply Accounting does deliver an impressive feature set at a very affordable price.
The user interface (with its roots in the old DOS-based program) is both a strength and a weakness: Longtime users will feel right at home, but com- pared with what you find in competing products, the menu-driven setup feels a bit choppy. For example, the user interface does not provide enough of a visible road map to the program's myriad features.
The setup process walks you through the early steps of building your accounting framework. Submenus are used extensively for daily transaction processing, since the main program screen displays only links to broad content areas such as customers, purchase orders and quotes, and time slips. Once you select one, the depth of detail available is more than adequate, and you can easily move to related forms and records.
One helpful management feature is the Daily Business Manager, which displays pending events such as payments due and purchase orders. The other most important management tool, a stable of customizable reports and graphs, is adequate but not exceptional. A new Check Log details the path of checks generated by displaying the number of times printed (and by whom), as well as transaction numbers and dates. This version of Simply Accounting PRO also simplifies the process of filtering and redrawing a report and lets you produce reports in HTML.
The big news regarding Simply Accounting 2003, though, is its integrated Web store. Setup is simple: The application displays an icon for every step of the process. You run a synchronization to bring in Simply Accounting data (items, customers, and so on), then select a design from more than 60 prefabricated templates. You have to enter additional information (like e-mail addresses for support, sales, and so on) and credit card preferences. Preview the site and publish it when you're ready.
When orders come in, you approve them and zap them back to Simply Accounting for processing. Monthly hosting fees start at .
Other smaller changes can help you keep better tabs on the many details required of an accounting tool. You can now create up to 100 departments within a company, making your reporting more focused. And your payroll chores have been simplified via the integration of Time Billing and Payroll; managers can generate paychecks directly from time slips. Payroll records now display vacation pay owed and outstanding balances for employee advances.
Simply Accounting 2003 PRO still lacks some of the grace of its competitors, but the integrated Web store is a big advance. And you can't beat the price.
