This is a book for the Sotheby's auction catalog sale held in New York on June 7, 2012 for Antiquities, covering 79 lots in 75 pages. All lots illustrated in color. Excellent condition. Here is what Sotheby's had to say about its sale: "This season’s Antiquities auction will include a variety of examples of Egyptian, Classical and Western Asiatic material. We are pleased to offer, from the Estate of Jan Mitchell, a rare and complete Greek marble grave stele from the mid to late 4th century B.C. showing a young boy with his dog, found in Athens in 1877. Three Greek pottery vases to be offered from this estate were once the property of William Randolph Hearst; one comes originally from George Waddington (1793-1869), Dean of Durham Cathedral, one from Alfred Bourguignon, the late 19th century Neapolitan collector and dealer, and one from the Ruesch Collection dispersed in Switzerland in 1936. The sale also includes a draped marble figure of a muse holding a lyre, which came to light in 1891 on the slopes of Mount Helikon. Among other fine examples of Roman marble sculpture is a long-lost almost life-size figure of Aphrodite, from the collection of the Regency collector and designer Thomas Hope, a newly rediscovered figure of Artemis of the Dresden Type, unearthed and published in the 1880s with a figure of Kybele, also in the sale, and a figure of Sophocles once at Marbury Hall and acquired by James Hugh Fitz-Barry from Thomas Jenkins in the 1770s. The highlight of the Egyptian section is a complete limestone block statue of a transport official named Karo, who worked at the court of King Rameses III; once in the private museum of a convent in Vienna, a gift made to the congregation in the 19th century, it was last sold in these room in 1998. Among the gems of the sale are a small Predynastic stone vessel of unusual and pleasing shape, and a slender Greek marble wing with remains of red pigment."Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution
