There is big talk about tubeless for a good reason. Rolling resistance, weight and puntcure protection are improved.
However, there are moments when it makes more sense to use tubes. For instance with your TT rig you just bust out 3 times a year for a pesky time trial during a stage race, or because your coach wants to see where your FTP is at your local Sunday TT. Or with your beloved Mountain bike that you ride far too little and is mostly collecting dust since all your MTB buddies became Dad’s. In both cases the tire sealant would just dry out over the months of inactivity and you would need to pour in fresh sealant every time you use your TT bike or MTB. Over time your tires will become a zoo for “stanimals” with little if no performance advantages over tubes.
Tubes are a good idea in these cases, and if you have to use tubes at least use the best. While TPU tubes are lighter, premium latex inner tubes still give you the best race performance. Latex tubes are light and subtle resulting in significantly reduced rolling resistance. You can save up to 5 watts using latex vs. butyl tubes. With an excellent bucks-per-watts ratio latex tubes are one of the cheapest performance upgrades you can do. In addition, the flexibility of latex also increases puncture resistance compared to standard butyl tubes.
