Whonix is based on Kicksecure which is a a security-hardened Linux distribution.

Features Details
No installation needed
as Whonix Gateway and Workstation are both run off a fully encrypted partition on a Xubuntu Live DVD.  This means there is no installation needed on the end user's part as is normally the case with Whonix.
Layered Security:
The host Operating System, Xubuntu is loaded on a 16GB Sandisk USB 3 drive.  On the Xubuntu encrypted partition runs Oracle Virtualbox which runs the Whonix Gateway and Workstation which are also encrypted.  This provides 2 layers of encryption and protection between the exposed operating system and the operating system on your hard drive.
