A sizable Tibetan buddhist community has made Uttarakhand its home and their culture has seeped into the daily life of those residing in the Himalayan pockets. When turned clockwise, it is believed to release positive energy into the world. Many devotees feel that the wheel represents the Wheel of Dharma and rotating it continuously is as effective as reciting the prayers. The table top wheels come in variety of sizes and is a variant of the hand-held prayer wheel as well as the giant metal wheels seen in Tibetan monasteries. It makes for an excellent souvenir from Uttarkhand as it is an indication of it’s rich and varied culture.
Ideally you need to place the wheel near a window so that it gets spun by the blowing wind. According to age old Buddhist traditions, a prayer wheel is a spiritual tool for accumulating wisdom and for purifying our bad karma or negativities. While turning the wheel you need to concentrate hand and repeat the Om Mani Padme Hum mantra. Chanting of the mantra not only enhances the merit you earn by turning the wheel but is also a very powerful technique to stabilize your mind.
